Birth of Calicut Marathon, 2010
Calicut for long has been the cradle of economy for Kerala and the greater South. Its serene and pristine palm fringed beaches, lush green forests, eye catching scenic beauty with rivers and hills make it a unique destination not just for nature lovers but investors as well. Calicut represents a city with great untapped potential for developments in IT/ITES and heavy industries. Its proximity to coast coupled with good connectivity by road, rail and air makes it a natural epicenter for increased economic activities. The entrepreneurial culture, the NRI base in the Middle East and the rich history of export oriented industries make it a natural destiny for both domestic and international investment. With leading technical institutes like National Institute of Technology Calicut and management institutes like Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, Calicut has been silently revolutionizing the education sector.

The Social Service Group, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode took great pride in bringing to Calicut city its first mini marathon in association with PT USHA School of Athletics and Calicut Management Association. This inaugural edition of the Calicut Mini Marathon saw thousands running shoulder to shoulder on the 31st of January 2010. With the theme "Be the Change", the marathon was a clarion call to the young minds of the city to wake up and act. It aimed to bring forth awareness in them about the various issues plaguing the society and urge them to lead by example, to be the change we wish to see in this world, as Mahatma Gandhi asked of us. The historic thinker Thoreau said, "Me thinks that the moment my legs began to move, my thoughts began to flow". On January 31st, 2010, the whole of Calicut ran and showed the rest of the world that we have the courage to start along the road of development, for a better India, a better tomorrow and for a better world.

Theme - "Be the Change"
Projection of Calicut as an upcoming city requires an exhibition of the true spirit of the city to the external world. It is about conveying a message of a modern technologically intensive city that has allied amenities from colleges to health care centers. It is about sending a strong message that Calicut embraces "CHANGE", the utmost reality.

Marathon goes a long way in conveying this message. As the theme says, "Calicut wants to be the change that it wants to see". It wants to be a modern city with rich traditions and ethical values, a serene place with a buzz of economic activities and rise as one of India's premier cities. Marathon is not just about few hundreds of people running for few kilometres, it is about reinforcing the belief that we want to see Calicut develop and showcasing the world that the giant is awake.

Event Partners and NGOs
The first edition of Calicut marathon had no fixed registration fee for the participants. The marathon, which aimed at creating change in society, followed a process of "Registration through Donation" wherein a participant wishing to register had the option to drop a donation amount which would be collected and given to the Pain and Palliative Care Society, Calicut on the day of the Marathon. Pain and Palliative Care Society provides exceptional service to terminally ill patients. This "Registration through Donation" process offered the participants an opportunity to contribute to social welfare.

The marathon was jointly organized by the Social Service Group of IIM Kozhikode. The Social Service group has been involved in a host of social development activities in and around Kozhikode and provides support to the weaker sections of the society. This inaugural edition of Mini Marathon was conceptualized and organized at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. IIMK, being a leader in many fields of managerial education, possesed the motivation needed to be the leader in organizing an event of this caliber in Calicut

The event partners included Calicut Management Association which is one of the most vibrant local management associations (LMAs) affiliated to the All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi. Based in Calicut, CMA is a body of management experts, executives, entrepreneurs, businessmen and academicians interested in promoting the course of professional management.

Another event partner included the Usha School of Athletics. P.T Usha and her friends in her native place chalked out a meticulous plan to launch the Usha School of Athletics in Koyilandy to train the young blood in Indian Athletics. A Rs 20 Crore project, the school, P.T. Usha says, will be the country's premier institute for training young talent. The brilliant performance of U.S.H.A students in the national and state championships, in the infancy of the school itself makes us confident that more and more medals are on the way in the National Meets, Asian Games, World Junior Championships etc., culminating in 2012 Olympics and the successive events.
